A Two-Day Celebration of India’s Timeless Classical Dance Heritage
Tirupati, July 11–12, 2026: Sathyabhama Nrithyotsav 2026, organised by Nataraj Music & Dance Academy (NMDA) and presented by The Dance India Magazine, concluded successfully after two days of exceptional classical dance performances at Mahati Auditorium, Tirupati. Conceived and led by Sri B. R. Vikram Kumar, Founder of NMDA and Editor-in-Chief of The Dance India Magazine, the festival once again reaffirmed its stature as one of the country’s significant platforms dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and propagation of Indian classical dance.
Founded by the legendary Kuchipudi exponent Padma Shri Dr Shobha Naidu, Sathyabhama Nrithyotsav continues to honour her enduring legacy by providing a prestigious stage for accomplished gurus, distinguished performers, and promising young artists from across India. The festival reflected a harmonious blend of tradition, scholarship, devotion, and artistic excellence.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Shri K. V. Muralikrishna, IPS, Chief Vigilance & Security Officer, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, and Shri S. Ravi Shankar Narayan, IRS, Former Commissioner of Income Tax. Both dignitaries appreciated the vision and dedication of Sri B. R. Vikram Kumar in nurturing the festival into a nationally recognised cultural movement. They also paid rich tributes to Dr. Shobha Naidu, acknowledging her unparalleled contribution to the growth and global recognition of Kuchipudi.
The first day celebrated the diversity of Indian classical dance through inspiring performances by students of eminent gurus from Tirupati alongside invited artistes representing Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi presentations showcased the richness of traditional repertoire through Tillanas, Varnams, and the iconic Bhama Kalapam – Pravesa Daruvu. Each performance reflected technical brilliance, expressive abhinaya, and a deep commitment to preserving classical traditions.
The second day elevated the festival’s spiritual dimension through a series of devotional Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi presentations centred on the compositions of Saint Annamacharya and the philosophy of Bhakti. Performances by distinguished gurus and artistes beautifully portrayed devotion to Lord Venkateswara, Lord Krishna, and Goddess Alamelu Manga through expressive storytelling and refined dance vocabulary.
Among the memorable presentations was Kalashri Dr. Lata Surendra’s thematic Bharatanatyam production Hari Smaranam, which explored the mystical union of Radha and Krishna with remarkable philosophical depth and emotional intensity. Nivedtha Sathish’s presentation on Smaranam, one of the Navavidha Bhakti, conveyed the transformative power of constant remembrance of the Divine, while Sanjeevini Bhat’s innovative Alaripu – Hanuman Chalisa demonstrated how creativity can coexist with classical discipline without compromising tradition.
Throughout the festival, the performances were marked by impeccable technique, aesthetic refinement, meaningful choreography, and spiritual expression. The participation of accomplished gurus, established performers, and emerging talent from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and neighbouring states reflected the festival’s growing national significance and its commitment to encouraging artistic excellence across generations.
More than a dance festival, Sathyabhama Nrithyotsav 2026 emerged as a celebration of India’s living cultural heritage, where devotion, literature, music, philosophy, and classical dance converged on a single stage. Under the visionary leadership of Sri B. R. Vikram Kumar, the festival continues to strengthen the legacy of Padma Shri Dr. Shobha Naidu while inspiring young dancers to uphold the highest standards of India’s classical traditions.
