Nartaki Academy of Bharatanatyam headed by Vijayalakshmi Suryanarayanan in South Mumbai celebrated its maiden Guru Poornima on 21 July at Mysore Association in Mumbai. Celebrations were in honour of Late Lalitha Swaminathan and Meena Ramaswamy, both being the inspiration and guiding force behind Nartaki. The dance festival received an overwhelming response from various dance schools across Mumbai and every Indian classical dance form was represented.
The festival began with the traditional lighting of the lamp by Jayashree Rajagopalan and P Subramanian, followed by an invocatory Mallari and alarippu by the students of Nartaki. Later, performances by students of Kashmira Trivedi, Kala Srinivasan, Anuradha Jalnawala, Aditi Kadam, Kalamandalam Vijayshree Pillai, Padmini Radhakrishnan, Dr Kanak Rele, Jayashree Rajagopalan, Sreelesh Nambiar, Girija Nair, Ajay Shengde, Vrunda Upadhyay, Asha Sunilkumar, Girish Dalvi, Dhananjayans, Pavithra Bhat and Jhelum Paranjpe proved to be a visual and musical treat. With the blessings of her gurus and humbled by the response of all the dance schools, Vijayalakshmi endeavours to continue the festival for many years to come.
