Text By: Bharathi M

In a beautiful tribute to India’s classical arts, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has showcased the influence of Bharatnatyam, one of the country’s oldest classical dance forms, on Indian currency. The initiative highlights how traditional Hasta Mudras (hand gestures) from Bharatnatyam are immortalized on various Indian coins.
The featured mudras include:
• Mushti Mudra: Depicted on the 50 paise coin, this closed-fist gesture symbolizes strength and determination.
• Shikhara Mudra: Seen on the 1 rupee coin, it represents a pinnacle or peak, often used to denote firmness and authority in dance.
• Kartari Mukha Mudra: Displayed on the 2 rupee coin, this gesture resembles a pair of scissors, used to express separation, opposition, or lightning in Bharatnatyam performances.
This initiative not only promotes awareness of India’s rich artistic heritage but also connects everyday objects like coins with cultural symbols, reminding citizens of the timeless traditions woven into the fabric of Indian society.
The Ministry of Culture continues to champion projects that celebrate the country’s diverse cultural expressions, making art more visible and accessible in everyday life.
