“In Loving Memory of Kumudini Lakhia — A Torchbearer of Kathak”
Text By: Bharathi.M
The Indian dance community has lost an extraordinary torchbearer with the passing of Kumudini Lakhia, a legendary Kathak dancer, visionary choreographer, and tireless teacher. For over seven decades, Kumudini ji devoted her life to redefining the classical form of Kathak, bringing new perspectives, contemporary sensibilities, and group choreography into a traditionally solo art form.
A disciple of great gurus like Pandit Acchan Maharaj, Shambhu Maharaj, and Pt. Sunder Prasadji, Kumudini Lakhia combined rigorous classical training with a fearless spirit of innovation. From performing with Ram Gopal’s troupe in Europe and America in the 1940s to founding Kadamb Dance Centre in Ahmedabad in 1962, she not only performed but shaped Kathak’s future.
Her landmark productions like Vivarta and choreography for iconic films such as Umrao Jaan stand as shining examples of her sensitive and dynamic artistry. Kumudini ji’s teaching legacy is equally rich — she mentored several renowned dancers including Aditi Mangaldas, Vaishali Trivedi, Sanjukta Sinha, and many more, creating generations of dancers who carry her vision forward.
Honoured with some of India’s highest civilian awards — Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Kumudini Lakhia’s influence extended far beyond the stage, as a thinker, writer, and outspoken advocate for dance and the arts.
Even in her interviews, Kumudini ji emphasized Kathak’s adaptability and timelessness, speaking about balancing tradition with contemporary creativity, and the role of dance festivals and education in nurturing artists. A passionate lover of gardens and nature, she lived a life of grace, discipline, and ceaseless learning.
We bow in gratitude to this grand matriarch of Kathak, whose art breathed life into tradition, inspired countless hearts, and left an indelible imprint on the cultural fabric of India and the world.
Our deepest condolences to her family, students, and admirers. Kumudini ji’s spirit will forever dance in every rhythm, movement, and heartbeat of Kathak.
